San Diego, CA – Canter Companies, a San Diego real estate investment firm, provided the The San Diego Fire Department with a practice environment for training purposes last weekend. The three houses, located on the corner of Hawthorne and Columbia in Little Italy, is the future home of a 10 unit urban infill development project joint ventured by Canter Companies and InDev (Invest + Develop).
Over two days, approximately 400 San Diego Firefighters gathered at the building. Searches, rescues, escapes, and breaching techniques were practiced through simulated fire and smoke. “Typically we are only able to use specific stations and training facilities to conduct these types of drills,” Jesse Schultz, an Engineer for the San Diego Fire Department said, “it really makes a difference to host them in new and unfamiliar surroundings to get the most out of the experience,” Schultz continued. Utilizing homes that already have a future of being destructed, like the Little Italy site, provides a unique opportunity to fabricate conditions that firefighters could encounter.
“We realize the most reward by providing the community with something that it can benefit from,” said Andrew Canter, CEO of Canter Companies, “If we can give the San Diego Fire Department a stage on which to train their firefighters while enhancing the city core with an infill development, then everyone wins.” The urban infill movement focuses on smart growth of areas by developing underutilized land into real estate that will help improve the existing urban fabric.
The units will be the second joint venture, urban infill project between Canter Companies and InDev, the first being the much sought after C2 Lofts in Hillcrest that were put on the market earlier this year. The companies are leaving the name of the Little Italy development in the hands of their community through a social media contest hosted with San Diego Magazine next month. “We love the idea of giving the residents of the community around this project an opportunity to get involved with influencing the name,” said Zac Stover and Matt Mellos, InDev’s principals. The new development will begin construction this month and is estimated to be complete in early 2014.
